RAAF Pearce Base – Flight School Accommodation
THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE
The construction of the new pilot training facility at the Pearce Air Force Base. WA was estimated to take 3 years to complete – However the base could not shut down as the RAAF needed to continue training its pilots. To solve this issue a concept was developed to create a temporary facility to house the 5,248 pilot trainees, but these temporary facilities needed to be of the highest standards and specifications – off the shelf solutions would not suffice. Project Managers Laing O’Rourke turned to Onsite to meet the challenge.
ONSITE RENTAL GROUP’S APPROACH
Onsite’s portable building specialists settled on a turnkey approach satisfying stringent safety, security and timing requirements. The approach involved installing and commissioning refurbished buildings that would need to be relocated from existing hire fleet in WA including the Pilbara. More than 100 buildings were transported 1,600kms.
Four months of major works on electrical modification, mechanical ventilation and structural layout and design transformed the buildings into a modern temporary high spec training facility for the RAAF.
THE BUSINESS ADVANTAGE
The temporary training facility is recognised as having the highest specifications of any portable buildings in WA. The RAAF were extremely pleased with their temporary facilities – following completion, the RAAF said they won’t be leaving this portable community unless their new facility is much better.
