For the past 5 years, Onsite Rental Group has been proudly sponsoring the Wombats, a competitive mining team of students from Australia’s oldest tertiary mining institution, the Western Australia School of Mines (WASM).
Since their formation and competition debut in 1999, the Wombats have been representing Australia at the annual International Intercollegiate Mining Competition (IIMC). The largest competition of its kind, the IIMC sees mining students from around the globe compete in events involving traditional mining methods, including Gold Panning, Hand Steeling, Air Legging, Mucking, Swede Sawing, Surveying, and Track Standing. The competition also gives students the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and peer-to-peer networking.
The Wombats have won the IIMC an impressive four times and have secured a place in the top three finalists every year for the last 20 competitions.
As a result of the team’s victories, the Kalgoorlie-Boulder region has now hosted the International Intercollegiate Mining Competition four times since 2002, the year of the Wombat’s first win. The 2002 victory also saw the IIMC being held outside the United States for the first time since the competition began in 1978. Needless to say, the Wombats have proven themselves to be outstanding contestants.
As they gear up to compete in the 42nd International Intercollegiate Mining Competition, to be held in March 2020 in the United States, Colorado, the Wombats are looking to sponsors to assist in preparing for the event.
Onsite recently supplied the Wombats with a JCB 1.7 tonne Excavator (on trailer) to help the team move mounds of rock and soil from their shed to their training grounds for Gold Panning practice. Gold Panning is one of the IIMC’s main events and involves the traditional mining method of extracting gold from earth using pans and water.
In a post on their official Facebook page, the Wombats expressed their gratitude to the team at Onsite Kalgoorlie for the equipment and support.
